Biographical Sketch

Dr. Paul Okunieff completed his Bachelors of Science in Biology and a Bachelors in Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT in 1978. He obtained his MD from Harvard Medical School in the HST (Health, Science & Technology) Program in 1982. His MD Thesis focused on the role that anti-oxidants might play in preventing radiation toxicity and improving tumor response to radiation. After completing a residency and chief residency in Radiation Oncology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1985, he continued on as a Fellow and then Instructor and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. In 1991, he became the Chief of Radiation Neuro-Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital and, concurrently, was Co-Director of Radiation Oncology in Boston at University Hospital. In 1993, he became Branch Chief of Radiation Oncology at the National Cancer Institute, where he was responsible for all radiobiology, radiation clinical protocol development, radiation medical director and directorship of medical physics. In 1997, he assumed the role of the Chairman of Radiation Oncology and Philip Rubin Professor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Clinical Specialty

Dr. Okunieff, with the assistance of the radiation oncology Fellows, is responsible for introducing and developing new innovative techniques, and supervising the Orange Service, which includes high dose brachytherapy, 3D treatment planning, and stereotactic radiosurgery. Clinical protocols include an oligometastasis protocol for curative radiosurgical treatment of metastatic breast cancer. He also directs the RTOG Office at the University of Rochester with five affiliated hospitals around the country. He is the Translational Research Chair of the RTOG.
